When conditions inside the unit go wrong, the coil surface can drop below 0°C even while the unit sits in blazing heat, and moisture in the air freezes onto it just like frost on a freezer shelf.
This is one of the more important AC symptoms to act on quickly, because continuing to run a frozen system risks damaging the compressor — by far the most expensive component to repair or replace.

1. Restricted Airflow
